Whales Off Fraser Island Paddle

August 5th, 2010

Interested in a semi-guided trip that allows you to paddle with Humpback Whales and camp 2 nights on a pristine part of Fraser Island? This trip is open to padders of sea kayaks, ski's and fishing kayaks.

We'll meet in Hervey Bay on the Friday night, at 9:30pm, to discuss details for the following day. (A later arrival will be fine as accommodation will be booked and we will be up early in the morning allowing time for final arrangements)

Slower paddlers will have the option to catch the barge to Moon Point on Fraser Island, leaving themselves a 14km paddle along Platypus Bay to our campsite. The rest of the group will depart from Urangan Harbour for the 28km paddle to our designated camp, passing Big Woody Island and Pelican Bank on the way across.
We will spend 2 nights at the same camp allowing plenty of time on the second day to paddle out and hopefully get up close to some whales. Fishermen will have a chance to wet a line.
Day 3 will see us break camp and either paddle back to Moon Point for the barge or all the way back to Urangan Harbour.

Date :  Saturday 9th Oct to Mon 11th Oct ‘10

Cost:  $190 per person ($150 for Adventure Outlet VIP Members) Includes:
• 2 nights camping fees on Fraser Island
• 1 night accommodation in Hervey Bay on the Friday night
• CD with photos & slideshow of the trip
• assistance with individual preparation of gear and/or skills for the trip
• optional instruction & tips throughout the trip from a Level 2 Sea Kayak Instructor
• logistics & risk management of the trip

This is the total cost if participants organise their own transport to Hervey Bay and are self sufficient with their own food & camping gear. This trip is being run as a trip of the GC Paddlers Group.
Other possible costs:
• Barge to Moon Point - $27 each way
• Transportation of gear to and from the campsite - $40 (This may vary depending on numbers taking up this option) - available for ski paddlers and other paddlers with limited storage capacity in their kayak.
• Car Pooling will be offered/encouraged to share the costs of getting there, and make driving safer by having a number of drivers in each vehicle. $75 is the suggested amount to chip in if catching a lift with someone else.

Requirements
• Minimum kayak requirements are a kayak at least 4m long, with a rudder/skeg. All sit-in kayaks must be fitted with front and rear bulkheads.
• All paddlers must wear/carry a PFD, have a paddle/leg leash and carry adequate food & water for the duration of the paddle
• Ski paddlers will be allowed to race but asked to regroup at Pelican Bank (8km) and then again 1 hour later (should be just before the camp)
• Sea Kayakers and Kayak fisherman will paddle across as 2 pods, a faster group and a slower group. All paddlers in these groups must be able to average at least 5km per hour for the duration of the crossing
• Hobie Adventure Islands can travel at their own pace but must not be behind the slowest sea kayak pod
• Paddlers going across on the barge will get to Moon Point first and can make their way north in Platepus Bay at their leisure
• Any paddlers unsure about the suitability of their craft or their ability to undertake the trip must talk to me about this early in the planning stage. I may suggest additional training or gear requirements

Tahe Marine Kayaks are arriving!!

August 5th, 2010

Register now for our free demo day and be the first in Australia to try some of these exciting models!  Details are as follow:

Tahe Kayaks Demo Day

Date: Sunday 19th Sept (as long as the container arrives! If not we may have to reschedule to the following Sunday)

Kayaks that will be available to paddle:

1. Greenland - This kayak is a direct descendent of the traditional canoe inspired kayaks of Greenland....where kayak's were born!
2. Greenland T - This sea kayak has the sporty feel of the Greenland, can still be Eskimo rolled without even trying, but is also extremely comfortable and easy to enter with the keyhole cockpit. It's a kayak that can be played in and taken touring.
3. Wind Solo - Great touring kayak for the smaller paddler. Features include skeg & rudder, paddle float rescue straps, glove box & water tight hatches. This kayak will cruise at a good cruising speed with little effort!
4. Wind 535 - From all reports this kayak does everything well. If you fit in it, and find it comfortable the Wind 535 will take you anywhere you want to go! The rudders we are getting on all the Oz Tahe kayaks will be the latest 270degree rudder from Smart Track. Here's a pick of the prototype....... The rudder's can be removed if you're doing a big surf session or you develop your skills and find you are happy with just the skeg. You may just put your rudder on for longer expeditions.
5. Wind 585 - Unbelievable value! So much kayak for $2990. Skeg & rudder, day hatch, glove box & integrated thigh bracing....and its quick.
6. Reval Midi - this kayak has the lines and styling of some of the traditional British sea kayaks. I haven't paddled one of these yet but if it is as good as it looks, for $2890 it will be a stand out in the composite skeg boat market.
7. Sea Spirit - At $2590 this allows buyers to enjoy the benefits of a composite sea kayak for the price of a plastic! Watertight oval hatches front & rear, integrated thigh braces, padded seat, retractable rudder and weighing just 23kg.
8. Coast Spirit - Triple layer high density polyethylene builds floatation and rigidity into Tahe's plastic kayak. With the new rudder system, weighing in at 24kg and priced at $1990 this will be the ultimate first sea kayak.
9. Lifestyle 444 - One for the more recreational paddler! Composite boat performance in a 4.5m package that weighs in at 17kg and priced at $1990! With the build quality and finish we have seen thus far from Tahe Marine this kayak will be in a league of its own!

The all NEW Tahe Marine kayaks are arriving at Adventure Outlet!

July 26th, 2010

One of the largest kayak manufacturers in Northern Europe, Tahe Kayaks was established 21 years ago. During this time the range of kayaks has increased significantly. Product development and production takes place on the northern coast of Estonia, using the most advanced technology and best materials available.

Due to their proximity to Scandanavia, some of the designs have traditional origin's, none more so than Tahe's Greenland & Greenland-T models.  The Greenland-T is an exceptionally exciting kayak to paddle.  For the sea kayaker that has a touring kayak and is looking for a 'sports car' to do their shorter paddles and general playing about, this kayak should definitely be on the short list.

As the recently appointed Qld distributor of Tahe Marine kayaks, our first container of these kayaks will be arriving in the second half of September. We are bringing in 9 different models including:

Wind 585 - rudder & skeg:  $2990

Wind 535 - rudder & skeg:  $2990

Wind 505 - rudder & skeg:  $2990

Greenland - skeg:  $2990

Greenland-T - skeg:  $3090

Reval Midi - skeg:  $2890

Sea Spirit - rudder:  $2599

Coast Spirit - 3 layer polyethylene - rudder:  $1990

Lifestyle 444 - rudder:  $1990

Of the 26 kayaks arriving, 14 of these are still available across all of the 9 models.  For more info you can check the Tahe Marine website at www.tahemarine.com or give us a call on 07 5571 2929
